A Healthy America

By Kalvin Ethan

The subject of health insurance is on everyone's minds as we have almost 50 million people without medical insurance today. Our government is focused on providing health insurance to everyone, but cannot agree as to how to go about this, or how it will be financed. Meanwhile, the 50 million people remain uninsured and are not receiving the medical attention that many desperately need. Many have applied for coverage but upon receiving health insurance quotes, they realize that they cannot possibly afford this for themselves or their families.

It is sad to see families who cannot afford the drugs they need to stabilize their health. Many are putting off operations and/or doctor visits and testing, just hoping that they can survive until help arrives in the form of insurance for all. It is sad to read articles about individuals who have small incomes and must decide between food and medicine. Some are taking half their prescribed medicines while others are not taking them at all.

Some argue that their programs available, which assist the poor with obtaining financial support for this medical issues, however not all the the Americans struggling fit into the qualifying brackets that are set. The goal is to provide medical insurance to everyone, but this can only be done by offering plans everyone can afford, while providing necessary coverage for all the medical needs of an individual.

In Florida, Governor Charlie Crist, a Republican, has recently implemented a plan to provide medical coverage to individuals and families who have been uninsured, or are newly uninsured because they have lost their job. Governor Crist, in conjunction with the largest medical insurers licensed in the state of Florida, has now provided medical insurance to over 3 million people who were previously uninsured. This act has provided people with the medical coverage they need to get healthy, stay healthy, and in some cases has saved lives.

We, as residents of the United States of America, need to make our voices heard! If we want a change we need to contact our local representatives, inform them that health insurance for all is our number one goal for the country, and that they must do whatever it takes to provide it for the millions in our country who go without medical coverage. Let them know that it will be reflected in the next vote, if this is not accomplished, after all we are the ones that elect them to make a difference, and there will be no excuse that is acceptable. - 29970
