Making Money Organising A Quiz Night

By Mike Tants

Organising a quiz evening can be a great and fairly easy to raise money. This article will talk about how to get punters, how to get a great quiz and how much you can make.

Advertising is key

The more people you get, the more money you'll make. Simple. So, advertising is key. How you go about this will depend on the venue and your target audience. If you are planning on running it in a local pub get the landlord's permission to put up some posters.

Another great way is to get contacts is put a large jar on the bar with a sign saying Drop your business card in for your chance to win BIG prizes. This should get a number of email addresses so you can then email them with the details of your quiz.

If the quiz night is going to be held for a parents evening at a school, or targeted at some other club or group of people then send out letters or flyers telling them about the evening and prizes (which Ill come onto later).

Quiz Packs

Hopefully you have generated enough interest with your advertising to ensure that you'll have more than a few people turning up. Next on the list of things to do is buy or create a fantastic quiz!

There are plenty of free resources on the internet allowing you to create your own quiz. However, another option for people with not much free time is to buy a quiz pack online - you can usually pick one up for a couple of quid and download them immediately for very reasonable prices, and they can include picture rounds, answer sheets, questions and answers and tiebreaker questions.

If you decide to create your own quiz remember some basic rules " dont make it too difficult or too easy. You dont want everyone getting everything right, but you also dont want to make people feel stupid by not getting anything right! Also, make sure the rounds are entertaining and the subjects interesting, and try to spread the questions around different generations and groups.

The Prize

The better the prizes, generally, the better the crowd! Some people will only be interested in the challenge of a quiz, a battle of wits against their friends but a good prize for the winners can only help. If you are holding the quiz night at a pub you may be able to convince the landlord to give the winners a free drink, after all you are generating him extra takings. For charities and fundraisers try to get the prizes donated or if nothing else, cash prizes are usually welcome (although this will have to come out of the takings)

How much profit can you make?

Obviously, more people = more money. Say you attract 50 people which is easily possible. Charging them an entrance fee of 3 will generate 150 immediately. Pub owners will also see a large increase in bar takings.

If you are able to sell additional snacks, chocolates bars and drinks you may be able to raise another 2-5 per person. This adds up to another 100-250 for the night.

Bottom line, you could make 400 from a single night, and thats only for 50 people. Double that and double the takings. Not bad for a couple of hours work and some advertising. - 29970
